Friedrich Chill 12,000 BTU Air Conditioner

The Friedrich Chill 12,000 BTU is a formidable window-mounted air conditioner, making it suitable for medium-large living spaces. With a range of convenient features and highly-efficient performance, this unit is definitely a contender for the top-spot when compared with other units of the same class. Retailing for about $499.00, this unit’s price-tag may weigh heavily on those of us working on a strict budget, however, for the amount of cooling power churned out by this unit, we believe the cost is more than justified. Check out our full review below for more information.

Cooling Performance

With an impressive 12,000 BTUs of cooling power, the Friedrich Chill 12,000 BTU air conditioner explodes onto the market, capable of servicing estimated areas of up to 550 square feet. This makes the Friedrich Chill 12,000 the ideal choice for medium-large living spaces. With a maximum airflow of 330CFM, the Friedrich Chill 12,000 BTU air conditioner is capable of removing up to 3.3 pints of moisture from the air per hour, which adds up to an impressive 79.2 pints of moisture each day.

Efficiency & Certifications

The Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) is an accurate measure of how efficiently a device is capable of operating, taking into account both the amount of energy consumed by the device and the performance output of the device. Put simply, the higher the EER, the more efficiently a unit will perform during operation. With the industry average standing at approximately 9.7, any units that score over 10 are generally considered to be highly efficient. With the Friedrich Chill 12,000 BTU scoring an EER of 12.1, users can rest assured that this unit will operate to a high level of efficiency.

Further guaranteeing this unit’s efficient performance, is its Energy Star certification. This essentially means that this unit follows tight guidelines set out by the Environmental Protection Agency. Further, in order to achieve this certification, this unit must be capable of outperforming a number of the units on the market, with regard to efficiency.

Unfortunately, there were no safety-related certifications regarding this device at the time of this review. That being said, Friedrich are known for their rigorous testing of their products. With most brands, not having a safety certification would be a cause for great concern, however, we have always found Friedrich to be exceptionally trustworthy.

Efficient operation is further encouraged with the inclusion of 3-cooling and fan-only speeds, allowing the user to operate their unit on the lowest speed necessary.

Convenience

A full function wireless remote control allows the user to issue commands to their unit from anywhere in the room, which is an underrated advantage over other units that lack this unit. The absence of the wireless remote control is felt most during the scorching Summer months, where moving across the room to tweak the settings on your unit is the last thing you want to do.

Auto Restart capabilities allow the Friedrich Chill 12,000 BTU air conditioner to automatically reboot itself following a power outage, and continue servicing its local environment on the same setting it was previously set to. This is especially useful for those of us who live in areas that suffer frequent blackouts. Without this feature, should your home be struck by an unexpected power loss while you’re away, your home will be without air conditioning until your return.

Money Saver mode allows the user to cut costs on their upkeep bills, by allowing the device to function on a decreased capacity. What this usually entails is the device periodically powering off and on, using the least amount of energy as possible in order to maintain a comfortable living environment, saving you a hefty sum of money down-the-line.

Fan Only mode allows the user to use their device to circulate air around the room without applying a cooling effect. This is especially useful on those clammy days when cooling is not necessary.

Design

Auto-swing oscillating louvers aid a more even distribution of airflow, to ensure that no area of your living space is left behind. This feature is particularly useful, and even rare in the industry, with many manufacturers choosing to not incorporate oscillating louvers, however we disagree with this design choice, as we’ve always enjoyed this feature at Air Conditioners Rated.

Washable, slide-out antimicrobial filters improve upon air quality, however we would strongly advise washing your filters as often as the manufacturer of the unit recommends, as your device may perform less efficiently with dirty filters. Additionally, EntryGard anti-intrusion protection further ensures better air quality.

The Friedrich Chill 12,000 BTU air conditioner weighs in at about 87lbs (93.2lbs shipping weight), making it quite heavy for a home air conditioning unit. Therefore, we highly recommend seeking assistance when transporting or installing this unit.

Unfortunately there was no specific decibel rating available to us at the time of this review.

Verdict

If your living space matches the description of this unit’s recommended area of usage, we would strongly suggest the Friedrich Chill 12,000 BTU window-mounted air conditioner for installation in any medium sized contemporary family living space. However, our only issue with this unit is its lacking of certain convenient features such as Sleep Mode, however, considering the amount of raw cooling that this unit provides, we believe such oversights are easily forgiven.
