Black and Decker BPACT08WT Air Conditioner

The Black and Decker BPACT08WT provides a user-friendly solution to beat the Summer heat with its portable design and range of convenient features. Its robust construction allows it to stand up against everyday wear-and-tear, while it’s 8,000 BTU output makes it suitable for servicing most average-sized living spaces. Check out our review below for more information on this addition to Black and Decker’s extensive range of HVAC products.

Cooling Performance

This exciting unit functions as a 3-in-1 appliance, serving as an air conditioner, dehumidifier, and fan. Capable of removing up to 3.8 pints of moisture from the air every day, the Black and Decker BPACT08WT is effective at tackling moderate damp. With 8,000 BTUs of cooling power, this appliance is most effective in living spaces of 300 square feet. However, we would not advise attempting to install this unit in larger spaces, as unit efficiency may suffer. Bear in mind that this figure assumes a ceiling height of 8 feet, and we would advise adding on an additional 1,000 BTUs of power per foot above this height.

Efficiency / Certifications

Benefitting from a UL-Listing, this product has been assessed by the industry-renowned Underwriters Laboratories. Bypassing these tests, the Black and Decker BPACT08WT is certified as safe for public use. Unfortunately however, this unit does not benefit from the Energy Star certification, which is taken as a guarantee of highly-efficient performance.

With an Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) of 8.94, this unit falls notably below the industry average of 9.7. This essentially means that this unit will not function as efficiently as many other units currently on the market. That being said, 8.94 is not necessarily a bad score, it simply means that this unit will only perform to a moderate level of efficiency, which will cost you slightly more in your energy bills.

The efficient performance of this appliance is further facilitated with the inclusion of three differing fan speeds and four-cooling settings, allowing the user to operate their device on the minimum required fan speed, thus saving energy over time.

Convenience

The Wireless Remote Control that comes included with this unit is a godsend in the sticky summer months, where peeling yourself off the sofa to move across the room takes more out of you than you might think. Now, the user is enabled to simply reach for the remote whenever they wish to change settings. Additionally, this unit’s 24-hour programmable timer allows the operator more control over when their unit is in operation, by inputting a timetable of operation, that the unit will function according to.

Finally, the built-in Sleep Mode will allow your device to gradually increase temperatures throughout the night while maintaining a comfortable living environment. While doing this, your unit will consume less energy, and make less noise, so as not to disturb your rest. An added perk to this feature is that it effectively eliminates the frigid feeling of waking up to an over cooled home.

Design

The Black and Decker BPACT08WT is supported on four easy-roll caster wheels, with side carrying handles for enhanced mobility. Weighing 52.9lbs, this unit is easily moved about the house to get where you need it to be.

With a 6ft. power cord, the number of potential installation locations is greatly increased.

Thankfully, Black and Decker have been generous enough to include a drainage hose connection, alongside a drainage hose for this device. This allows for continuous drainage while the unit is pulling moisture from the air. What this essentially means is that you will not be burdened with having to empty the tank of this unit very often.

Finally, a top-mounted LED Display Control Panel allows the user to manually adjust the settings on their unit with ease.

Verdict

While not the most efficient or powerful unit on the market, we certainly believe this unit to be effective at what it does. Not everyone needs a 14,000 BTU unit or a product with ceiling breaking EER scorings. The Black and Decker BPACT08WT is a sure-fire way to bring a refreshing breeze to your home when you’re suffering in the depths of the mid-Summer heat. In addition, the added Dehumidifier capacity will come in exceptionally handy if you’re worried about excessive humidity, although if you live in an environment that suffers from extreme humidity, we would advise looking a little up-market, as this unit will only take the edge off the stuffy air.
